Top 5 Books to Read on Grandparents Day

---------------------------------

A New York Times bestselling picture book--from the creators of the hilarious HOW TO... series--about a child spending time with his grandpa. Written in a how-to style, the narrator gives important tips for "babysitting" a grandpa, including what to eat for snack (anything dipped in ketchup, ice cream topped with cookies, cookies topped with ice cream) what to do on a walk (find lizards and dandelion puffs, be on the lookout for puddles and sprinklers), and how to play with a grandpa (build a pirate cave, put on a scary play).

Filled with humor, energy, and warmth, this is a great gift for or from a grandparent, and perfect for lap reading when Grandpa comes to visit!

Grades K-3

When you babysit a grandma, if you're lucky . . . it's a sleepover at her house! And with the useful tips found in this book, you're guaranteed to become an expert grandma-sitter in no time. (Be sure to check out the sections on: How to keep a grandma busy; Things to do at the park; Possible places to sleep, and what to do once you're both snugly tucked in for the night.)

From the author-illustrator team behind the New York Times bestselling HOW TO... series comes a funny and heartwarming celebration of grandmas and grandchildren.

5. The Ultimate Guide to Grandmas and Grandpas! by Sally Lloyd-Jones

Did you know that when you have a grandma or a grandpa, there are guidelines for how best to take care of them? There are all sorts of special things you need to do to make them feel loved. Now here at last is a manual packed with advice, pointers, and helpful hints. For instance, you need to dance for them, sing to them, draw pictures for them, and even hold their hand when they cross the street! It's also very important that sometimes you take a nap with them (so that they're not the only ones). But most importantly, you need to give them lots of hugs and kisses—because that's what grandmas and grandpas like best!

History of Grandparents Day

Grandparents Day was established to:

1. Honor Grandparents

2. Allow grandparents and opportunity to show love for their grandchildren

3. Help Children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older family members can offer.
Due to the perseverance of Marian McQuade, a West Virginia coal miner's wife and mother of 15 children, the first Grandparents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Virginia. In 1978, five years after its West Virginia inception, the United States Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. The proclamation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. (September was chosen for the holiday, to signify the "autumn years" of life.) Today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by millions throughout the United States.
